Comments: The Square "B" was introduced in 1929 as a replacement for the Square which ceased production in the same year. It was one of three "B" styles introduced during 1929 and 1930 and was popularly accepted by the consumer. The Barrel "B" and Cushion "B" were the other two "B" models. The Barrel "B" was introduced in 1929 and replaced the Barrel which ceased production in 1930 and the Cushion "B" which was modeled after the Cushion Form Round, was introduced in 1930.
In keeping with Hamilton's new policy of utilizing high grade movements in solid gold models, the Hamilton catalog offered the Hamilton 979 movement for Square B solid gold versions in 1932 and the gold-filled Square B was offered with the Hamilton 987 17-jewel movement.
The Square "B" was offered with the Hamilton 987 17-jewel movement for both gold and gold-filled versions. The solid gold versions of the Square "B" are scarce and desirable amongst Hamilton collectors.
The Square "B" Engraved was also sold as a "two-tone" version - the bezel and case back are 14K white gold while the center case is 14K green gold.
Two-tone Hamiltons are extremely rare and Hamilton did not maintain production numbers for them. It is believed that they were either "special orders" or were distributed amongst several jewelers in extremely limited quantities. There is only one known example of the Square "B" - Engraved two-tone and it is held in a prominent West Coast collection.
All known Hamilton two-tone models, which include the Square Plain and Engraved, the Barrel Plain and Engraved, the Oval Plain and Engraved and the Barrel "B" Engraved were manufactured by the Fahys Watch Case Company and all are solid 14K gold.
