Comments: The Tonneau is a classic Hamilton design and was a very popular wrist watch with over 56,000 examples manufactured by Hamilton during its six-year production range. The Tonneau is still held in high regard by collectors due to its classic styling and large size - most early wrist watches were small by today's standards (the Tonneau is 34mm long by 27mm wide excluding the crown).
Of the approximately 56,000 Tonneau's produced, fewer than 5,000 were produced in 14K yellow, white and green solid gold and subsequently are significantly rarer than the yellow, white and green gold filled versions.
Although Hamilton catalogs did not advertise yellow gold and yellow gold filled Tonneau's, Hamilton did produce the Tonneau in yellow gold however they are fairly scarce.
This model was one of six geometrically shaped wristwatches that were popular up until the late 1920's. Hamilton's "Geometric" offerings spanned ten years - beginning in 1917 with the 0-sized Cushion and ending in 1927 with the Oval. Included in the geometric models are the Cushion (0-sized, Cushion Round and Cushion Form Opening), the Square, Barrel, Tonneau, Rectangular, and Oval.
